BBL™ BD™ Penicillinase / Penicillinase concentrate

Intended Use
Penicillinase is an enzyme preparation used to neutrelize pencillin and permit growth of organisms ordinarily inhibited by the antibiotic.

Summuray and explanation of the test
Peniciliinase may be employed to ascertain the sterility of products containing penicillin, or to detect organisms present in the blood or secretions of patients under therapy with penicillin.
Penicillin concentrate is recommended for use in official procedures for sterility testing of products containing penicillin.
BBL™ penicillinase has a potency of 1 million units/ml, as assayed by the kinetic method of Kersey et al.¹. According to this method of assay; 1 unit of benzyl penicillinase will inactivate 0.39 units of penicillin per hour in phosphate buffer, at pH 7.0 at 30°C.
BBL™ Penicillinase concentrate has a potency of 10 millions units/ml.

Principles of the procedure
Penicillinase has the specific property of inactiving penicillin by hydrolyzing the bond linking the nitrogen atom to the adjacent carbonyl carbon of the Beta-lacatm ring.².

Product description
Penicillinsae is an enzyme obtained from culture filtrates of a specific strain of Bacillus Cereus. It is a purified, non toxic, clear preparation having the ability to inactivate penicillin.
